Hmmm, I have no problem with them. My guess is that there's simply nothing to talk about at the moment.

They don't do much for me musically anymore, but really, I stopped liking them when they tried to turn "Which Side Are You On?" into a pro-America song on stage in Chicago.

the murphys are cool. they put on a good show, and are good at what they do. I thinks its stupid that they were "cool" before their "success" then everyone and there mom said they suck now. is it because they have a considerably larger fan base[and somewhat mainstream] and are well known? I feel the true judge is in the live show, and they dont dissapoint. they have stuck to what they do, and gained a big fallowing doing it. whatever, the music speaks for itself...does flogging molly all the sudden suck because a 12 year old might like em too?

i don't like dkm or flogging molly as much anymore just 'cause i've grown out of it. i'm not as big of a fan of bands that blend punk with celtic music as i used to be. now i listen to more traditional stuff so i can see how they fuck up some good songs. my politics have changed a lot, which is why i don't like dropkick murphys as much. and flogging molly just isn't that great. it really has nothing to do with their popularity.

I'll listen to Flogging Molly from time to time, and I'll probably buy their next album. I've seen them three or four times now live, but they really aren't worth seeing again until they get some new stuff together.
DKM on the other hand... I dunno. I convinced Jonah Sod not to give up hope when he saw DKM shirts at Hot Profit, but then I went out and bought Sing Loud, Sing Proud and was, as time went on, more and more disappointed with it, although there are some good things in it. I probably haven't put them in the cd player in nearly two years.

well I am new to this msg board, so feel free to slag me off for my opinions..lol
I think Dropkicks and Floggin, for that matter are great bands, could someone explain the 'politics' issue regarding DKM, as I wasnt at this event, I would like to know how they tried to change a song and make it into a pro american one?
thanks

for me personally the politics thing is just clashing views. when i first got into dropkick murphys i was a patriot and shit and loved america and all that dumb stuff like dkm does. i've changed a lot since then which is partly why i've lost a lot of interest in them. bjart is talking about their cover of florence reece's song "which side are you on?" here's a link that can explain the meaning of it so i don't have to. ;D www.geocities.com/Nashville/3448/whichsid.htmlbut to me it doesn't seem like they're making it pro-american. i don't know what happened in chicago.

On stage in Chicago in 2001, they introduced the song like this: "This song asks you which side are you on. And it better be America's!" Which is just absurd considering how supportive of unions the American government has been.

Dropkick Murphys is fantastic. I like Dropkick Murphys, Floggin Molly, and all of the lesser known stuff, and just about all folk stuff. I think Dropkick Murphys does their covers very well, for instance, Fields of Athenry is fantastic, unlike Neck's cover, that slaughtered it. I love it all. I guess I can understand why some of the more folksy people don't like it, but I love it all.

Dropkicks is pretty good to but I definatly dont think that neck slaughtered it. I meant that I like just about all Irish music, weather it's really well known or not. And I've listened to Neck's version a few more times, and it's grown on me, but I just don't think it captures the atmosphere of the song.

Indeed, I had a cracking time too in Brighton, great little venue, very relaxed and no problems either, unlike the bouncers at the Academy in Bristol - they were shit as always and ended up kicking a few folk that I know out (they even dragged one girl out by her hair), they weren't doing anything that I haven't seen at previous DKM shows, and wouldn't allow the traditional stage invasions either. So, it were nice for the opportunity to climb up on stage in both Nottingham and Brighton. What were the general feelings on the support acts? I thought that The God Awfuls were far superior to the Bouncing Souls, but that's just my opinion. I'm looking forward to seeing SLF at the very same Bristol venue end of the month, though I'm not looking forward to going back to that crappy venue

I am a huge fan of the Dropkick Murphys and have been for years. I think they have evolved into a more cohesive entity over their last few releases as well. They went from a strictly punk band to a punk band that ocassionally did Irish songs, to an Irish-Punk band that occasionally did straight-up punk songs to the 'Blackout' CD which finally brought all the tunes into the same category. Any political issues attached to the DKM are a result of locale. They have, from the beginning, attempted to acquire a Boston-Irish, punk sound, not just an Irish one. They seemed to avoid the 'Up the Republic' bandwagon, as well as any anti-British mentality and focused on more accessible, local themes such as the classist struggles and blue-collar issues of Boston and other such American cities. I just picked up the Singles Collection Volume 2 and, although I enjoy it, I don't think it is as good as their last few studio releases, (of course, one could argue that these were the tracks that didn't make that cut...)
(I know I am going to get shit for one comment or another, so go ahead; Bring it.)
I am really looking forward to the new studio album due out in June.

baroom heroine: yeah the concorde is a great little venue..i spend far too much money on far too many gigs there lol always a general good atmospehere at gigs in brighton i find, pretty laid back place.
as for the support bands i though the godawfuls were shockingly poor so we stood in the bar. ive liked the bouncing souls for ages n seen em a few times before so thought they were brilliant, was very drunk and even got in the pit lol all good fun though!

I wouldn't hesitate to come back to Brighton/Concorde 2, oddly enough I might be down again next month.
Jesse James are headlining - I personally can't stand 'em though my mate loves 'em, and seeing it's her birthday I agreed to come down provided there weren't anything else better on that we would both prefer to do. I'm just hoping the support bands will be alright...still, there's always the beer!

Singloudsingproud - did you go to the Brighton Jesse James show in the end?
I ended up going, still not a fan of Jesse James though I saw some reasonable bands that day and am glad I went. Noticed the crowd thinned out big time towards the end of the evening, seemed as though quite a few folk were there to see certain bands only and not the headliners.

The gig was good fun overall and it were nice to meet up with a few folk we know from that neck of the woods. Plus Brighton's a nice town anyway for shopping etc. Ah, I've been in The Tottenham though my latest haunt when I visit London is Ben Crouches Tavern, which can be found in a side street (Wells Street) between Oxford Circus and The Tottenham:- www.eeriepubco.com/pub.php/ben_crouches/Food is good and at a reasonable price and the coctails are to die for! I'll be doing the Brum FM show instead...
