Hi to everybody!
When the 2008 list was discussed, Professor Gommel told me if I could make some suggestions about European releases.
After having thought about that, I have decided to make some samplers of the different European "Celtic Punk" scenes. I intend to upload to mediafire 1 or 2 samplers every month (I have ready 6 right now). The files will be compressed with winzip, so I feel that everybody will be able to open them.
These samplers are based on tracks that are available free on the Internet. None of them come from albums that I have ripped. Besides, none of them have been downloaded from P2P networks. They are available in the bands' websites or in sites such as myspace, lastfm or others. In other words, they are not illegal downloads, it is not piracy, as you can go to those sites and download those tracks free one by one. The only thing that I have done is to put them together in one place. I have checked all of them and have re-tagged some the best I have been able to (band, album, year, original track number and genre)
If some of you are old-fashioned people like me and want to burn the mp3s to audio CDs, I have also made some artwork for them. In that booklet I have included the line-up of every band, the website and the discography.
Obviously the quality of the mp3s may vary, unfortunately some of them are low quality. Regarding the bands that are included in every sampler, I have tried to put at least 4 bands. I have decided not to include some bands because they have recorded mainly covers (traditional songs, Pogues songs ...) and give priority to those who write their own material
Please remember that these samplers are for promotional purposes. You can download them free and if you ever find some tracks from an album that is worth buying, don't hesitate to get in contact with the band and buy it.
The next message will include the link to the first sampler.
Enjoy!

This is the link to the first sampler. www.mediafire.com/?kwgzemkwhzyVol. I includes 5 bands from The Netherlands: 1) Circle J www.circlej.nl2) Drunken Dolly www.drunkendolly.com3) Herman www.hermanfolk.nl4) Stuart O'Malley and the Whiskey Gullivers www.whiskeygullivers.tk5) Quality Export www.qualityexport.nlOnly Circle J has released some albums, the rest of the bands have recorded demos. Circle J is the best band. This combo was a punk band, but after seeing Flogging Molly in 2002 they added some traditional instruments to the line-up and moved to a Celtic-punk sound. In 2005 they released a 4 track EP, "Lower your Standards" and at the end of 2007 they released a 9 tracks album "Fat Man's Chest"
You can order both CDs directly from the band: www.circlej.nl/store.htmlremco@circlej.nl Other bands from the Netherlands that have not been included in the sampler are: Finnegan's Lads www.myspace.com/finnegansladsFolkaholics www.folkaholics.nlAnd a couple of bands that are defunct and released one album: Curling "The Virgin Takes" (2001) (Most of the tracks from this album were available free many years ago at mp3.com) Riverflow "Live at Shannons" (The first Pogues-influenced band from The Netherlands. Most of the tracks from this album were available free some years ago at vitaminic) Enjoy the sampler. I will try to post the next issue before the end of the month. By the way, your comments would be appreciated. Cheers

Awesome! Always hooking us up with some good shit!
I have "Fat Man's Chest" by Circle J and it is some really decent stuff!
The other bands, (with the exception of Quality Export; that's me with the globe in their MySpace comments!) are new to me! I'm gonna hafta check 'em out.
Thanks, dude. I'll do the same thing with some bands that I have found in my own mining, (legally available stuff only, to whet the appetites, o'course!)

Hey all. I don't have another "Sampler" per se, but I do have a coupla links to some websites that have whole downloadable releases. The links I included are from the pre-Pogues bands Horslips, (who readers here may or may not have heard me rant about in the past,) and a band called Mushroom. I included some of the write-ups to whet appetites. Mushroom - Early One Morning, 1973: chrisgoesrocks.blogspot.com/2008/05/mushroom-early-one-morning-good-irish.html"An Irish group who formed in Dublin in 1972... Some classic tunes include Liothdon (along with it's counterpart Crying), and the second side of this disc is almost all memorable rock riffs mixed with fantastic flute reels and minor chordage, such as Standing Alone, Johnny The Jumper, Potters Wheel, King Of Alba et al." The song "Devil Among The Tailors" is a ripper! Horslips - Happy to Meet...Sorry to Part, 1972: orexisofdeath.blogspot.com/2008/06/horslips-happy-to-meet-sorry-to-part.htmlDebut release from Horslips. True, mostly falls under the "Folk-Rock" umbrella, but still, great stuff. Horslips - The Tain, 1975: orexisofdeath.blogspot.com/2008/06/horslips-tain-1973-irl-folk-rock.htmlDEARG DOOM, MOTHERFUϹKER!Horslips - The Book of Invasions: A Celtic Symphony, 1977: frisiansotherfavorites.blogspot.com/2007/11/horslips-book-of-invasions-celtic.htmlConsidered by many to be the band's biggest success. A strong mix of 70s rock and a shitload of trad instruments, including fiddle, mandolin, flute, tin whistle, concertina and uilliann pipes. If you want more of Horslips, the Orexis of Death site, ( orexisofdeath.blogspot.com ) has a few more of their albums for download... These may not fall into the Celtic Folk Punk category, but it is some great music from the 70s, and a big, (if often overlooked,) part of the paddy-punk lineage. Cheers.

My new sampler includes four French bands, two from the South and two from the North West of the country, the Celtic area (Brittany). www.mediafire.com/?mrzmwmbjyew1) ZapoThis band comes from the South East of France and they sing in several languages (French, Basque, Spanish and even English). The band was founded after having seen a gig of the Spanish band Celtas cortos. At the begginning, the name was Zapozain (the man who takes care of the toads, in Basque), but when they released their third album, they changed to Zapo (toad). One song comes from the debut album, another one for the second album, another one from the third album and six from the last one (released in 2008) www.myspace.com/zapozainThe last three albums are available at www.cdmail.fr2) The Booze BrothersAnother band from the South of France. All the songs come from their last album, Hang on, released in November 2008. booze.brothers.free.frThe previous album is available at www.cdbaby.comElevator and Hang on are also available at www.cdmail.fr3) Les BouzouksA band from Brittany, they have only this track in a label sampler. www.myspace.com/lesbouzouks4) Fiston MorbackAnother band from Brittany. It's a punk band but sometimes they use some traditional instruments. The tracks come from demos. fistonmorback.perso.cegetel.netOuttakes: Celtic Hangoverwww.celtichangover.comA band fronted by an Irishman. They have released 6 albums and one DVD. Some of the early albums are no longer available. A new album will be released this year. Soldat Louiswww.soldatlouis.comA band from Nantes, a town that historically was Brittany (Today it belongs to Loire Atlantique). Rock from Brittany, the first albums were interesting ( Première Bordée, Pavillon Noir, Auprès de ma Bande) Escale sur la Planète was disappointing. Shane MacGowan was a guest in one of their albums. Black Label Zonemembres.lycos.fr/sambatThis band from Brittany released two excellent instrumental albums ( Toufed Vil, Pot Velu), but the third one, with a singer and some line-up changes, Kilt ou Double, was really bad

Germany's 'In Extremo' do a wide assortment of trad instruments in a dark, droning and malicious style that you may like.
Metal, (not sure if it is "Black Metal") but with out trad. instruments, is 'Geasa' out of Dublin. Who do songs with an Irish mythology subject matter, "Tuatha de Dannan," and "Duan do mo Bhean Sidhe" among others, (including a version of "Spansill Hill") on their 'Angel's Cry' CD.
Also outta Dublin is 'Primordial,' a veteran, (late 80s!) metal band, again, no trad. instruments band strong Celtic/Irish subject matter.

This is the link to the 5th sampler, Belgium. www.mediafire.com/?ecmzaizjjwwEven in this small country with 3 different languages (French, Flemish and ... German) we can find some bands mixing Celtic music with punk or rock. 1) The first band , The Black Tartan Clan, comes from Antwerp (Flanders). They have released a demo and one album. They are really worth hearing: www.theblacktartanclan.com2) The second band, McBee's Brewery, has only released a demo: www.myspace.com/mcbeesbrewery3) The third and the fourth bands are more folk-rock than punk-folk. Cluricauns have released 4th albums, the third and the fourth ones are available at www.cdbaby.com. www.cluricauns.com4) Et Encore has released one demo and three albums. www.etencore.comAnother band that has released three albums, a live CDR and a demo, but has not been included in this sampler is Ceili Moss. They classify themselves as Acoustic Folk-Rock. www.ceilimoss.beRemember that the 4 previous samplers (The Netherlands, Switzerland, France and Italy) are still available. Enjoy

Germany is the biggest country in Europe (if we don’t take into account Russia). Moreover, there is a strong following of bands such as The Pogues, The Men They Couldn’t Hang, Oysterband, etc. As a result, there are a hell of a lot of Celtic Punk and Celtic Rock bands around that country. I have tried to include in this sampler different bands from the usual ones ( Fiddler’s Green, Across the Border, The Porters, Mr. Irish Bastard ...). It was a little bit hard, but finally I have found some interesting bands. Boggin Leprechaun is a band from Nuremberg (Bavaria). This six-piece outfit released an EP in 2007 “The Boggin EP”,and has just released their brand new album, “Within Blood, Stout & Roll”. All the tracks in this sampler are taken from the EP. www.boggin.euDe Drangdüwels come from Westerau, in the North of the country. This band is special, since they make a Pogues-influenced music, but they sing in a German dialect called Plattdüütsch (Low German). My favourite song is St. Pauli. I thinks that it is a song about a football team from Sankt Pauli district in Hamburg. Discography: “Hart an Wind” (2003) “FC. St. Pauli & de Störbeker-Trilogie” (2004) “Hold Fast” (2004) www.drangduewels.deNycromatic are also from the North of Germany, from Lübeck, another Hanseatic city. These 5 guys released one album in 2006, “Green Hills, Red Rivers” and they will release the follow-up in 2009, “Celtic Nights” www.nycromatic.deFinally, a different band called The Gang of Erin that play Irish Hillbilly. Till now this band has only recorded a demo. www.myspace.com/thegangoferinDownload link www.mediafire.com/?ikjtyw2qnni

Volume 8th includes bands from Serbia and Croatia. I have decided to include Irish Stew of Sindidun, even if they are well-known after their second album, but not to put other well known bands such as Belfast Food (Croatia) and the Orthodox Celts (Serbia), with a longer discography. belfastfood.comorthodoxcelts.comAs it has already been said, Irish Stew of Sindidun (Serbia) has released a couple of albums and they have shown their maturity with the excellent second CD. So Many Words (2005) Dare to Dream (2008) In the sampler you will find 4 tracks from the first album and 5 tracks from the second one. www.irishstew.netThe next band, Great Drunkards, are also from Serbia. Their discography only includes a 6 tracks demo www.myspace.com/greatdrunkardsIn the sampler I have included 5 tracks from the demo The third band is Shamrock (Croatia). They have released a demo and an EP Demo (4 tracks) 2007 Otom Potom (5 tracks EP, 2008) All the tracks from the EP are included in the sampler. www.shamrocklovran.comThe 4th band, Jolly Rogers (Croatia) has not recorded any CD yet: www.myspace.com/jollyrogerszgTwo demo tracks can be found here. Finally, another new band from Croatia, Paddy's Allstars. Only one demo track in the sampler www.myspace.com/paddy39sallstarsDOWNLOAD LINK: www.mediafire.com/?izkthmm4zmz

This sampler includes 4 Czech band, two bagpipes punk bands, an indie/alternative band using folk instruments and one Celtic Folk Rock band. The first band is Benjaming Band, a true bagpipes punk band that I have really enjoyed. They sing in Czech and their website is also in Czech. Apparently, they ahve a long discography, but I feel that most of the recordings are demos. "Uvitacka" (11 tracks, 2002) "Berlin" (9 tracks, 2003) "Chlapi to Maj Tezky" (6 tracks, 2004) "Palirna" (11 tracks, 2004) "Svihak" (14 tracks, 2005) "Americke Popelniky" (16 tracks, 2008) www.benjamingband.czThe second band, Pilsner oiquell, is an oi! band influenced by Dropkick Murphys that has added a piper to its line-up. The name of the band is based on a well-known Czech beer, Pilsner Urquell: This band has covered some DKM and Real McKenzies songs. " Zivot Je Boj" (14 tracks, 2001) " Svata Pravda" (15 tracks, 2004) " Zapal si Vlasy" (7 covers EP, 2006) " Na Zapadny Fronte Klid" (12 tracks, 2008) www.oiquell.euThe next band is neither really a Celtic Rock, nor a Celtic Punk band, but they use folk instruments (fiddle, banjo, accordion). The name of the band, Divokej Bill, means Wild Bill (Hycock). This band has a close relationship with the Levellers. They have played at the Levellers' Festival (Beautiful Days) and the Levellers have played at Divokej Bill Festival. Besides, Divokej Bill has toured Great Britain with the Levellers. They have released some albums and two DVD. " Demo" (4 tracks, 1997) " Sedm Statecnych / The Magnificent Seven" (demo 7 tracks, 1998) " Osm Statechnych / The Magnificent Eight" (demo, 9 tracks, 1999) " Propustka do Pekel / Passport to Hell" (14 tracks,2000) " Svatá Pravda / Holy Truth" (16 tracks,2001) " Mezi Nima / Amongst Them" (11 tracks,2003) " Lucerna" ( CD+DVD 17 tracks,2004) " Divokej Bill / Wild Bill" (11 tracks,2006) " Rock for People" (DVD 18 tracks,2007) www.divokejbill.czThe last band, D ick O'Brass, is a Folk Rock band that has released only one album, " Disk O'Brass" (11 tracks, 2006) The link: www.mediafire.com/?nztzmjyyzjn

This sampler, no. 10, includes four bands from Hungary. Two are Celtic punk bands that have already been mentioned here ( Firkin and Paddy and the Rats) and two are folk-rock bands ( BlackRiders, Rat Boys). The first two bands show clearly that excellent Celtic punk bands can be found elsewhere. Firkin comes from Budapest. The band was founded by an old member of MEZ, the main Hungarian Celtic folk band. This 7 piece outfit has released a 5 tracks promotional single in 2008 and intend to release its first album during 2009. www.firkinband.comPaddy and the Rats are from Miskolc. The band has six members and they are sharing their songs for free. paddyrats.comBlackRiders play American Folk Music and Irish Folk Music. They are not as interesting as the previous bands, but you can enjoy them. Till now they have released a demo tape and a couple of albums. www.blackriders.huFinally, Rat Boys. It is a "difficult" sampler, as many people know the great Norwegian band Greenland Whale Fishers and they could expect to find something as good as them. Obviously, that is not so easy. The first band is a folk-punk band, Belfast Muslims. They come from a town called Halden and are six members. Normally they play well-known songs/tunes and I wish that in their next album they would include some self-penned songs. All their albums can be bought from their website. Just click on "Butikk" www.belfastmuslims.comDiscography: "Spanish Lady" (10 tracks, 1998) "Cigarettes & Bayonets" (10 tracks, 2001) "Rising of the Moon" (13 tracks, 2007) The next band is from Bergen, Shenanigans, a folk-rock band. They are a five piece outfit that apparently has only released an EP. www.shenanigans.noDiscography: "Shenanigans EP"The third band is Belfast Lads, they are fronted by a guy from Northern Ireland and the fiddler/flutist is from Romania. www.belfast-lads.comThe fourth band, Foggy Few, is a folk-rock band that also comes from Bergen. These five guys have released an album that can be bought from cdbaby.comwww.thefoggyfew.comDiscography: "The Pint of No Return" (11 tracks, 2006) The last band is from a place called Stjordal, Lassie'n the Lads (yes, you're right, many Belfast and many Lads). It is a folk-rock band and has five members. www.lassienthelads.comDiscography: "Demo I""Demo II""The Storyteller" (12 tracks, 2008) The album can be bought from different Norwegian on-line stores: Cdon.com, musikkonline.no or Platekompaniet. Some of you are familiar with this band. Their EPs have been reviewed at Celtic-Rock.de, they have had some airplay at Paddy Rock Radio and they were also mentioned in this message board when the 2008 Top 10 Celtic CDs were discussed. Till now they have released a couple of EPs and have played with bands such as The Mahones, The Dreadnoughts and Circle J. If you like DKM, Rancid and the Real McKenzies, you will enjoy Bastards on Parade. BlackPint are from Tre Valli, Dicing (Switzerland). The band was founded in 2005, by 3 ex members of PunkSeck, ivaN, Vito and Jack. After having looked for additional musicians, Laura and Sara joined the band. The kind of music that the band plays is "Combat Folk Punk", a blend between folk music (usually Irish folk) and punk rock music. The word "combat" is added because of the political lyrics that they sing. After a while the band began to write their own songs, thanks to the musical experience of the band players. All the songs from their debut EP are included here, but if you prefer to have it separate with its own original artwork, this is the link. Once you are in the page, you have to click on CLICCA QUI: www.nextpunk.ch/~blackpint/ep.htmlwww.blackpint.comDiscography: Demo 2006 Demo 2007 Demo 2008 The BlackPint EP (3 track EP, 2009) Hakka Muggies is a rock band based in Prague, Czech Republic, and was founded in 2002. Its music is strongly inspired by the folk music of countries with a Celtic tradition, mainly Ireland and Britanny (France). The current band's line-up includes vocals, bodhran, flute, violin, electric guitar, bass guitar and drumset. www.volny.cz/hakka_muggiesDiscography: Rocky Road to Ireland (demo, 2004) Jezevci a bubny (demo, 2005) Is fearr an bas (14 track album, 2007) Paddy Murphy are from Steyr, Oberösterreich (Austria) .They play traditional Irish Music, blended with rocking, speedy, powerful, tuneful and mystical arrangements. Folk and rock musicians meet to play an explosive blend of Irish Speed-Powerfolk, Celtic-Folkrock and Dublin Funk Grunge. Their repertoire is full of songs about the Emerald Island, Irish rebels, the fight for freedom, love and powerful and fast tunes. The five members, playing fiddle, banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, bodhran, drums, bass and electric guitar, make a sound in which traditional Irish songs and tunes, "cooked" with chili & pepper, are turned into party songs. www.paddymurphy.atDiscography: Demo BlackBeers are from Oradea (Rumania). Originally, The Blackbeers was set up in August 1999, by Peter Moynahan (vocals, guitar, banjo, mandolin and kazoo) and Zoltan Biro (accordion, bagpipes and whistles). In october 1999, a fiddle player, Tunde Levay, joined them. 2003 was the year of their international debut, when they first got to play in Hungary, Belgium, U.K. and Ireland. At the end of the year a major change took place in their line-up when one of the founders of the band Zoltan Biro left the band and he was replaced by Johnny Doe who plays the whistles, the Irish flute and the bodhran. In the spring of 2004, they recorded Cuig, their first studio album that was presented at several summer festivals and a pub-tour in October-December. At the end of the tour Johnny left the band and his place was taken by drummer/percussionist Misu Stana. In 2005 they launched the new Celtic-Rock line-up and presented new lead-guitarist Norbert Scheck. But for the fans of traditional music they will keep an unplugged version as well. www.blackbeers.comDiscography: A Taste of Irish Music, (10 track demo, 2001) Drink the Night Away (16 track live album,2002) Cuig (16 track studio album, 2004) Demo (2005) DOWNLOAD LINK: www.mediafire.com/?hkt5dmzjmmn

(two CDs + an out-takes CD). This is the first one. 1) The Rumjacks (Sydney, New South Wales) I guess that everybody knows them. Will’s band has released a couple of EP in only one year and we are eager to hear a full album www.myspace.com/therumjacksDiscography: "Hung ,Drawn & Portered" (5 track EP, 2009) "Sound as a Pound" (6 track EP, 20009) You can find the EPs at www.amazon.com and at i-tunes. They take traditional Irish jigs and twist them to make them their own. After a few months of drinking, singing and writing, The Hornswagglers sound was beginning to emerge. As the days drew on and the nights began to fall, the pieces of their music jigsaw puzzle were falling into place. Every song they play is something new and exciting; whether it be a Gaelic jig, with a punk feel or even some traditional punk with a bossa twist, their unique sound will always leave you wanting more.” www.myspace.com/thehornswagglersDiscography: "Lights Out" (5 track EP, 2009) The EP is vailable at: www.thehornswagglers.bigcartel.com/category/cds4) The Handsome Young Strangers (Sydney, New South Wales) www.myspace.com/thehandsomeyoungstrangers“Driza was becoming increasingly concerned with the number of young Australian musicians emulating a sound and culture that failed to reflect the history / roots of the performers and punters alike. Although supportive of all Australian music, we found it difficult to listen to young white suburban men from blue collar, middle class backgrounds attempting to portray themselves as poverty stricken, struggling, gangsters. The Handsome Young Strangers set out to remind the live music audience that we have a rich, often bloody, heritage coloured with struggle and triumph to draw upon, and that much of it has been etched onto the pages of history through song. Flagship Bush bands had come and gone, and with the Bushwackers slowing down, it was time for a New Generation to step up and continue to spread the stories from our past and celebrate our unique culture.” Discography: "Shane Warne" (3 tracks, EP, 2007) "Melbourne Town" (Single 2009) DOWNLOAD LINK: www.mediafire.com/?tdtwmyzzodm
