Recently came across these guys, Rum & Rebellion on iTunes of all places. Bit more folk-y than the Barstool Hooligans though not as far as most other bands. I kinda like 'em. They have energy and the sprinkling of mandolin, accordian, and fiddle(very thin sprinkle, mind) is like the faint warmth of a splash of rum. The celticness may be almsot nonexistant(you really gotta listen) but they still do some damn good stuff. cdbaby.com/cd/rumrebellion

Nah. That ain't a silly name. You want a silly name? Check these guys out. www.myspace.com/smitingshillelaghs Good stuff but " Smiting Shillelaghs?" The band had better be good. Or these boys... Potatoe Famine, (with a nod to "W" with the e at the end, yet!) www.myspace.com/potatoefamineCroatian band Belfast Food, ( www.myspace.com/belfastfoodband, ) has a kinda goofy name but you can forgive them because a) they're foreign, and b) they're not that bad. Or Austria's Puke! www.myspace.com/schottenrock Whose Schottenrock CD I like a lot actually. But The name is difficult to get around. Band names are tough, though. Something that carries some intent of the music but doesn't sound cheesey. My favorite band name in this genre has to be The Causeway Giants. I think that's great. And Roaring Jack, though I think it's reference is a bit obscure...

I wasn't sayin' that the name itself was funny, but that it was funny... 'cus.. y'know... There's a band with the same name... sans ampersand.

To that end, check these out... The Gobshites, www.myspace.com/gobshites, and The Gobshytes, www.myspace.com/gobshitesca Or The Blaggards, www.myspace.com/blaggards and Blaggard, www.myspace.com/bla99ard, which is now known as Rum Currency, www.myspace.com/blaggardwarmstout, not to be confused with The Currency, (or Rum &/or Rebellion). Also Pubcrawlers, www.myspace.com/thepubcrawlers, and The Barcrawlers, www.myspace.com/thebarcrawlers. And of course, The Mahones, www.myspace.com/themahones, The Family Mahone, www.myspace.com/rustymahone, Mahones, www.myspace.com/godfathersofirishfolk, The Pug Mahones, www.myspace.com/thepugmahones, Pogue Mahone, Rogue mahone, Mahone, Et cetera, ad nauseum.

It may be possible that Big Mac is unaware that "RumRebellion" was also the sign-in name of a long-standing Shite'n'Onions member and contributor, Ben, who plays bouzouki for the band Rum Rebellion.
So the gag here isn't as random as it may seem.

However, inside jokes aside, I think a thread dedicated to lesser-known bands in the genre is a great idea. And since this is as good a place as any, (what with Rum & Rebellion already on it!), I'll follow suit and do out the next one. I came across these guys and enjoyed their sound, especially the song on their MySpace page called "Freedom." The band is called Paddy and the Rats, ( www.myspace.com/paddyrats, ) and I kinda dig 'em. No CDs or releases just yet it seems, but six decent tracks of some pretty good production on the site, all set to grab! Check 'em out and lemme know whatcha think...
