hey,
been a while since we had much discussion here.
I know The Tossers cam out with On A Fine Spring Evening, fine CD, they seem to be trying to make it a bit lighter than before. I blame their PR planner, The Mighty Regis had another good one with Another Nickel For The Pope.
Now, i know i've missed alot so c'mon lads, what're some good discs to try?

Hey! Yeah, my copy of the new Tossers just arrived yesterday, and although I haven't been able to give it more than a cursory spin-through yet, it does seem to be leaning more towards the folksier side than the edgier punk of some of their other releases. But I don't dislike that. I need to hear it a few more times for a verdict. If you are looking for something more on the punk side, I could suggest Tortilla Flat. They had a CD last year called "From Vine to Wine" that was pretty good. Kinda like DKM but with a Social Distortion feel to it, too. Myspace: myspace.com/tortillaflatch. STILL waiting for the new Neck... If Currency or The GO Set would ever make it to this hemisphere, that might be nice, too.

I got the Tossers' new one the other day. I'd have to say I agree with Gommel (he's a professor, after all). Bands that only do one thing all the time tend to get boring (with the possible exception of the Ramones, but even they had the odd clunker or two...*cough*Subterranian Jungle*cough*). I also picked up Enter The Haggis' Soapbox Heroes, which I know is not a new release, but that's a pretty good buy if you don't have it.

My copy of new Tossers record finally arrived a couple of days ago and have to say im loving it. It does seem a bit folkier but id much rather that than have them go the way of the likes of DKM. Top marks from me!

...Bands that only do one thing all the time tend to get boring ... Too true. But I can't help wondering if this was a strategic departure as well. Yeah, it is good to see some of the bands songwriting and musicality applied to rootsier, folkier sounding songs, but it also makes it much harder to compare it to " The Valley of the Shadow of Death," like so many of us did with " Agony." This new one is in a different weight class, so to speak. It also helps to keep the band from getting pigeonholed. It may be a nice and varied addition to the bands catalog, but it might also be a very clever move. ...with the possible exception of the Ramones... And don't forget AC/DC; they made 4 riffs fill 16 albums!

When I first bought Agony I thought it compared unfavorably to Valley, but I have to say on repeated listening it's really grown on me - I actually think it's a stronger album. As for CD recommendations, may I humbly suggest the new Wages of Sin... coughcough

I, too, think it is a great release. But, as much as I like Agony, " Valley..." is one of my favorite CDs of all time. Not just in my top ten favorite Paddy-punk CDs, (securely in there, BTW,) but any CDs; Sabbath, Buddy Guy, anyone. Just my opinion...

Yeah, "The Valley of the Shadow of Death" is probably still my favorite Tossers album, if only for the song "I've Pursued Nothing," which probably is one of my favorite songs of all time.
And I'd be dumb not to be a little shameless and recommend "The Rivers Run Deep" by The Righs.

I have to say after a lot of listens to the new Tossers disc this week that i really love the track 'St Stephens Day'. Its in a 'Fairytale of New York' type vein. Lovely stuff.

At the risk of standing out, I have to say that I like "Agony" better, although "Valley" is an outstanding album.

Does it make anyone else laugh a lil' that the last few Tossers albumns... if you looked at 'em, without knowing the genre... would strike you as metal albumns.. The titles do nothing to dissuade that, either.

From the S'n'O review of Agony........
One more thing. What's with the cheapo death metal art work? I going to blame Victory Records for that.

I wonder if that's why they put a picture of a bird on this one.

At the risk of standing out, I have to say that I like "Agony" better, although "Valley" is an outstanding album. I agree... we can stand out together One more thing. What's with the cheapo death metal art work? I going to blame Victory Records for that. I read an interview w/ T. Duggins in LoudFastRules (punk 'zine) where he said he explained the cover concept to the artist (who I guess is well-known in the metal world) so that it wouldn't come out looking like a metal album and then it came out looking like a metal album! Dunno if Victory made them use the artist or what...

I am a big fan of The Tossers - and even though I'd probably say when asked that Valley is my favourite...it is Purgatory that gets the most air time.
And I think the new one is great. Especially the bit in Katie at the Races where T. screams "you bollocks!" It is just so funny I have to always play the song twice - love it.
