Hello There, There used to be a shop in Norwood, Mass called Noonan's that sold Irish instruments, but it's been gone for a while. Does anyone know of any other shop in the area that might carry something more than a Walton's D tin whistle? I'm looking for other keys, as well as bodhran supplies. Anyone? Bueler?
Oh, I should introduce myself. My name is John, and if you've been to any Black 47 shows in the Boston area lately, you've seen me behind the merch table hawking their wares. You may or may not also know that I just joined the Gobshites on whistles and bodhran (and possibly beer trays, but we'll see how my head takes to that...).

Hey! Welcome aboard. Good one signin' up with The Gobshites. I saw 'em at the recent Neck show at The Beachcomber. Tight outfit.
I haven't been at the tin whistle long enough to be out looking for good ones yet, but the was a great shop in Arlington called Wood 'n' Strings. Obviously, it focused on stringed instruments there, (in fact, I got a fantastic mandolin there a few years back,) but I think they carried some other stuff, as well.
Another place that may be worth a phone call anyways, is Cambridge Music, in, surprisingly, Somerville. They have a pretty eclectic selection. Again, I haven't been shopping for a decent whistle, (a six dollar Clarke's is good enough for me right now!) so if these are dead ends, apologies.
Welcome aboard S'n'O, though.

Thanks Paddy. And thanks Professor, I'll definitely check those places out. I remember meeting you at the Beachcomber show. It was your sister stepdancing during Neck's set, was it not? I was the guy in the scally cap ;D

Yeah, that was me, (and the sister, Monica.) Great show, eh? Some pics: Monica dancing at NECK. The Scally cap in question? ☝ Here's another cool shot. Yeah. That was a great time. Looking forward to the S'n'O production! (And I bet there's a good chance you'll probably be playin' at it!) ;D

Well as it turns out Central Music in Brockton had a mostly full compliment of Generation whistles. So now I wont sound quite as atonal on some of the songs. If anyone's interested, the website www.whistleanddrum.com is pretty neat, if for no other reason than to drool over the high end bodhrans and whistles, if that's your thing. I'm not one to patiently wait for stuff, paticularly since Generation whistles are as inexpensive as Clarke or Walton, but some of the stuff they have is very nice and might be worth saving your pennies, or threatening Santa's health over. Seriously, if I don't see an Art bodhran under the tree, that fat fuck's going down. And again, thanks for the well wishes everyone. We've got a bunch of local shows coming up, and a bus trip to Connolly's in NYC on 12/6 to play with Black 47. And coming in the Spring of 2010, a trip to Ireland(! !) Check out our Myspace page for more info. Go raibh maith agat!

The web site is great, but my advice is to look only, then order elsewhere. What a fucked-up operation this is. I recently ordered a Dixon Trad whistle from them. They listed the item in stock, confirmed the order, charged my credit card and a week later emailed me that the whistle shipped and the order was compete. After 10 days of waiting, I contacted them to let them know I hadnt received it and they tell me it didnt ship, it's backordered at least 4 weeks. So after 3 weeks of waiting for a whistle they charged me for but never had in stock to begin with, I cancelled the order and I'm now waiting for them to credit my charge. When the credit appears I'll place my order direct with Tony Dixon's site in England and pay the extra few bucks.

Wow, sorry to hear about that. I also just ordered some Dixon trad whistles from them, but I got them straightaway, so I don't know what happened on yours. I do have a potential problem with one of them, as the D whistle's mouthpiece slides right off, and it's not a tuneable, or at least not intended to be. So maybe I now have a tuneable whistle by accident. I'll need to call them on Monday.
And incidentally, Gommel, that scally, and the head underneath, actually belong to Pete Walsh, our lead instigator. I'm in the first pic, to the left of the bald guy in the green shirt, but I'm not wearing my scally in that one. I don't remember taking it off, but there are a few things about that night that are still kinda gray, so I'm not surprised...

My night got kinda fuzzy, too, (especially after my wife said that she would drive home. "WAITRESS!!!") Party of a night, though.

They did credit my card, but today I got a phone call from the owner, Blayne, who just got wind of the problem I had. Apparently I was the first to place an order when they updated their web site and a software glitch was logging backorders as shipped. He said that and some other glitches have now been corrected and their web site now shows how many of each item are in stock to avoid future mistakes. He apologized for the mixup and made me an offer on a brass trad I couldn't refuse. He seemed like a square guy, and wanted a chance to make things right, so I placed another order.

Did you have to return it? They did great with my second order. Guess the problem with my first order was just a fluke with their new web site software like they said.

Actually, as it turns out the whistles are tuneable, which I was not aware of, so the problem wasn't actually a problem after all.

And in case anyone's interested, The Gobshites have more or less settled on as close to a ermanent lineup as we're likely to get, with the additions of Dave Robicheau (formerly of Meat Depressed, Pete Walsh's pre-'Shites punk band, and now backing guitarist for Davey Jones) (yes, THAT Davey Jones) on banjo, and Jeff Foreman (formerly of Charm City Saints) on fiddle/bozouki. So, what we have now is:
Pete Walsh: Lead Vocals, Guitar Stephen Feeney: Accordion, vocals, merchandise dude Jay Caffelle: Drums, vocals Jeff Foreman: Fiddle, bozouki, vocals Jonathan Lamaster: Mandolin, fiddle, vocals Dave Robicheau: Banjo, vocals John Curtin: Tin Whistles, bodhran, vocals, skanking Steve Fiddle: Fiddle (duh), Banjo, Mandolin ...and a rotating cast of bass players, as well as the smoking hot Lori Feeney as guest vocalist on a few songs.
This is more or less the lineup that will be appearing at our shows for the forseeable future, and will also be on the Irish tour in 2010. Of course there's plenty of time for all of that to blow up in our faces, but the bulk of us are pretty committed to doing up this beoch. Thanks to everyone who comes out and supports our beer tabs, and look for our float at the 2009 Southie St. Paddy's parade.
