It was 5 years ago. Flogging Molly were going to play in the smallest venue of the town. The band was not popular here and the day and the venue were not the best ones. But the band was in my town and they were touring with Drunken Lullabies. Not so many people then, no Flogging Molly T-Shirts. But those who were there enjoyed one of the best gigs I've ever seen.
At the end of the gig I got my copies of Alive behind the Green Door and Swagger signed by the band and I got the set list signed too.
End of May 2008. The band was back in town. The venue was bigger (Bilborock, an old church). I had to go, even if I was a little bit concerned about the set list. FM is not so popular here as in Germany or The Netherlands.
This time the crowd was bigger than five years ago. Some people wearing FM T-shirts, a couple of Dropkick Murphys T-Shirts, and other people wearing Pogues T-Shirts or Celtic Glasgow or Ireland's National Soccer team shirts. I was wearing my Ramones T-shirt. Just in front of the stage there were some students coming from English speaking countries (Erasmus students that are spending one year at the local Universities, I guess)
As I have told above, I was afraid that they would profit to play many songs from the new album, Float.
Fortunately, that was not the case. They opened with No More Paddys Lament and they only played another 3 songs from Float: Requiem for the Dying Song, Float and Lightning Storm
The rest of the set list (not in the order they were performed):
Swagger
Selfish Man
If I Ever Leave This World Alive
Salty Dog
The Likes of You Again
Devil's Dance Floor
Drunken Lullabies
What's Left of the Flag
Rebels of the Sacred Heart
Whistles the Wind
Tobacco Island
Within a Mile of Home
Only two encores, Black Friday Rule and Seven Deadly Sins. Dave played almost all Black Friday Rule solo with his guitar. The rest of the band joined when he was singing "but there is no job in the old free state"
The show was great. I keep on thinking that FM plays energetic shows. If the band is playing near your home, buy the ticket and enjoy the gig.
At the same time I feel that Float is not FM at their best. I hope that the next album will be better
