To wit: * The Cherry Cokes * Royal Shamrock * The Croagh Patrick Anyone dig these cats? You've got to hand it to them, they've got some pretty tasty lashings in there ... Croagh Patrick have got this 'Straight To Hell' (as in the movie) thing happening, design-wise. The Cherry Cokes have got a couple of good clips on youtube (how can you ever go wrong with a song called 'BULLET FOR VAPID BEER' ) and Royal Shamrock have this sort of busking and oldtime rock'n'roll hooks sound and they do 'All For Me Grog', which I've always associated with Australian bush bands, complete with classic bush band instrumental riffs. All sound like they'd be very good live bands.

Hey Will,
I have been trying to order The Croagh Patrick's "Hell's Jig" for a spell now! I have heard a coupla' tracks off their MySpace and dig the sound. But all roads to acquiring this have turned up dead ends.
It is on backorder at Amazon.jp, and I've written to the band, (in both English and Japanese,) and am getting no reply. You don't happen to know how I can get my hands on this, do you?
'Preciate any leads, Chris

Also, Mr. Dean, (S'n'O's own 1788) turned me on to The Cherry Cokes a bit back and since then Rouse Up and Beer My Friends have both received exhaustive rotation at the Toler abode!
Great stuff!

I volunteer the good Professor for TWO thousand words of exuberant 'reviewmanship' (?!) on the aformentioned sub-category, seeing as he was brave and bold enough to make a request in Japanese calligraphy on parchment in the first place! A rennaisance man if there ever was one. Or, how about this: A one thousand word review in ENGRISH! (And you're allowed to say 'Engrish' and not look like you're taking the piss out of anyone in a nasty way 'cause there's whole books on the subject) So long Yankee, break my heart ...

I volunteer the good Professor for TWO thousand words of exuberant 'reviewmanship' (?!) on the aformentioned sub-category, seeing as he was brave and bold enough to make a request in Japanese calligraphy on parchment in the first place! A pain in the keister, is what that was! Like this: 1. Write the first sentence into the "English to Japanese" online translator. 2. Cut and paste the translated Japenese BACK into the translator and have it translate Japanese to English, (to make sure the meaning is intact.) 3. Re-write the sentence until the japanese translation carries the same meaning. 4. Do the same with each subsequent sentence. 5. Wait for reply. I may have already written 2000 words! I am still on step 5, by the way...

I enjoyed The Cherry Cokes first album (Beer my Friends), but I feel that the second one (Rouse Up) is not so interesting
Other CDs by Japanese bands:
The Clovers "Greenfield Rumble" The Classic Chimes "Faiely Tales Taboo" (sic)
The Clovers are OK. The Classic Chimes are said to be the Japanese Pogues, but as far as I remember (I have heard their CD a couple of times) they aren't really an Irish Folk Punk band (in fact, they are defined as "rustic stomp")
This is my first post. Cheers.

Indeed, good to meet you, Sir Kinsman.
RUSTIC STOMP, ay??
I'm liking the sound of that. I've been looking forward to a new musical description of what I hope to be some good new music. Good stuff.
Cheers,
Will ;D

The rustic stomp stuff has been covered here a lil' bit, too. T'me I think of it, as like... What pyschobilly did to rockabilly, but done to... jugband.. but with a touch of spagetti western soundtrack thrown in fer flavor. (Too many food euphamisms) But s'damn good stuff.

You know, I lived in Japan as a kid and I know they soak up western music over there, but I still have trouble believing there are Japanese Celt-Punk bands. But then, I play with a couple of (half) Persians, so whatever.

Yeah, I really dig the Japanese take on the sound. Anybody familiar with the band "Junior?" www.myspace.com/jprjunior Another rambunctious, rowdy, enthusiastic group of musicians with an appreciation of the Celtic folk-punk thing. But these guys do the whole kilted sha-bang!

Good news, Fans of the Japanese sound, (like myself,) www.Amazon.co.jp and www.HMV.co.jp are now in English as well as Japanese, (which goes to show the size of the influence of the Queen’s tongue, eh? Wow! THAT sounded dirty! Ooops. I digress...) I recently ordered a couple of CDs, one from either site, without issue. But be sure to check both when ordering something, though, as shipping costs vary from one item to the next. Some of the CDs available, (and their costs,) are: At HMVThe Cherry Coke$ - Sail The Pint, ’08 - ¥2415 The Cherry Coke$ - Rouse Up, ’05 - ¥2100 The Classic Chimes - Wandering Chimes Boogie, ’05, - ¥2500 The Clovers - Smiling at the Broken Bottles - ¥1575 ( With sound samples!) The Clovers - 朽チ果テナイ唄, ’06 - ¥2625 ( Also with sound samples!) The Croagh Patrick - Hell’s Jig, ’07 - ¥2520, (Highly recommended, BTW!) Junior - Rights, ’03, - ¥2415 Royal Shamrock - Advance and Retire, ’08 - ¥2310 At Amazon.co.jpThe Cherry Coke$ - Sail The Pint, (the new one!) - ¥2414, (new&used starting from ¥2000) The Cherry Coke$ - Beer My Friends, ’04 (N&U only - ¥7675!!! Over $80.00 after shipping!!!) The Cherry Coke$ - Rouse Up, - ¥1995, (N&U - ¥1799) The Classic Chimes - Wandering Chimes Boogie, ’05, - ¥2494 (N&U ¥1837) The Croagh Patrick - Hell’s Jig, - ¥1880 Junior - Rights, (N&U) ¥10,000! (Yes. That translates to about a hundred friggin' US bucks! Good to see opportunistic rip-off artists are a global occurrence!) As to the ¥en’s value... ¥100 is equal to: = $1.01 USD = €.75 (Euro) = £0.58 GBP = $1.20 Canadian = $1.52 Australian = $1.68 NZD So, if you find yourself with an extra nickel or two burnin’ a hole, here is a huge assortment of flavors to sample! Cheers, or rather, Kampai!

So, for the interested, here are a couple more like-minded bands from the ol' Rising Sun... Mt. Paiot’s (Oirish Orchestra) - ' Northland Stomp' Ole Díck Foggy - ' 繁栄とその周辺' , and ' ナキニッシモアライズ' with some samples at www.myspace.com/mtpaiots and www.myspace.com/oledíckfoggy, respectively. (Censors came up "olethingyfoggy!") Some good shit. Worth a checking out.

Ok, that last sampler post finally got me interested in The Cherry Cokes. Can anyone tell me if they're singing in Japanese or some garbled English? It is interesting though. I just ordered their latest cd "Sail The Pint" from someone on ebay since I couldn't make sense of the group's web ordering. I wanted their first one too, but I couldn't find it.

Hey. Yeah, I believe the majority of the songs are in English. The titles are in English and every now and again I can make out a word or two, (rarely, but it happens.)
The lyrics may be hard to make out, but no more so than Blood or Whiskey's on Cashed Out on Culture!
