hey lads,
in my travels throught the Celt-punk world i have come across a number of bands covering Trad classics ( Leaving of Liverpool, Night that Paddy Murphy Died, etc.)
I've been having a sort of musical tryouts in my head to see who does the best cover of what and this is what i've come out with:
Finnigan's Wake - The Tossers(though i liked the one by the Pubcrawlers) Black & Tans - Saint Bushmills Choir Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye - Dropkick Murphys Irish Rover - this has been a close one but i think the tossers version (the one where he says "This th' last one you fucks!") is on top. The Night that Paddy Murphy Died - Fiddler's Green The Leaving Of Liverpool - AMADAN
additions?Comments?Corrections as to which songs are indeed "classic"? feel free to comment on/add your own. there's some sweet covers out there.

Huh. Tha' all seems well an' good, but a broad subject to cover.
Jus' 'cus I've got a bit, I'm gonna throw ya some hell. Heh.
Finnegan - ... I don't know that I have a favorite, per se, but.. The Tossers one got old fer me, after about two weeks. All the background stuff was novel at first, but.. man, does it drag out.
Black & Tans - S'a band called Black Irish Texas, tha' does a medley with it. S"my favorite.
Johnny - I agree, but mostly 'cus... tha's jus' a damn intense song.
Irish Rover - I got nothin' here.
Liverpool - The Dolomites. No question.
----
Others :
Star of the County Down - Prolly the Skels
South Australia - The Dust Rhinos
Wild Rover - ...I'm sick of this song.. for all that we do it, too. But (as far as I know, anyhow) no one else has changed it to a minor 'sides us, so as a matter of interest, I'm gonna go with The Staggerers. Heh.
Lannigan's Ball - Toss up between the Murphy's an' Enter the Haggis.

Good topic. My personal fave trad covers:
Back Home in Derry - Neck from the Psycho Ceilidh EP. The High Reel - Horslips, single from 1973, but later released on the Greatest Hits CD. I Never get sick of this. MacPherson's Rant - The Real MacKenzies, "Clash of the Tartans." Broad Black Brimmer - The Sharky Doyles from "Back of the Yards." Young Roddy McCorley/Kelly The Boy From Killane - The Skels, from "The Book of Skels." Ryebuck Shearer - Catgut Mary offa Myspace, I guess.
Seconds to: GreenfordBhoy: Rare Ol' Times by Flogging Molly. In complete agreement. Awesome version Tom Fucking McSod: Leaving of Liverpool by The Dolomites. Big Ditto. That's just a fuckin' ballsy CD all around, though.
And in regards to The Wild Rover, overplayed as it is, I gotta go Dropkick Murphys for my favorite version of this. Still sick of it though. Tied for worst version in my opinion, goes to Finnegan's Lads offa "Uisce Beatha," and Clatterbone's from "With a Twisted Grin."

If I ever hear another band cover The Wild Rover, I will stab my eardrums out with dirty chopsticks! I know the feelin'.. I still say give ours a shot, 'fore ya go stabbin' the ol' eardrums out. Hehe. 'Cus blues-ey minor. S'not done in a way anyone ever has. Jus' sayin'. youtube.com/watch?v=MPXGu3jldTM------------------------------- ------------------------------- Worst covers, eh? As previously mentioned.. The Tosser's Finnegan's Wake is jus' boring as sin to me, now. Also, not a fan of... Any version of Monto I've heard, e'er. (Which is also why we do it. When I find a decent song tha' no one can make interesting, tha's usually wha' I try to do.) Also, also, I hate hate hate hate, with the fury of a thousand suns, Neck doing Fields of Athenry.

mmmk... after some thought and consultation of your replies i have a revised list.
Finnegans Wake - McSod said the Tossers version was as borin`as sin an`noone offered an alternative so i guess this one goes to the Pubcrawlers
Black & Tans - Listened to the one by Black Irish Texas, which are an awesome band for those of you who don`t know, but their version of B&T is a little long winded.
Irish Rover - in prevention of BBrian stabbing his eardrums with the aforesaid asiatic eating untensils i have decided not pick on for this song.
Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye - DKM, through an` through
TNtPMD - Fiddlers Green has gone undisputed so far
Leaving of Liverpool - Unanimous vote seems to be The Dolomites Tho` ive yet to hear it.`
Star Of The County Down - Seems to be the Skels but i like the Neck one personally this is just a quick update. More to come as discussion merits.

I have to say (gets ready to duck) I really dislike the DKM version of "Fields of Athenry".
I'm all for revving-up traditional-type songs (yes I know FoA isn't really 'traditional'), but to me the big-guitar anthemic treatment just ruins that song. It's meant to be a lonely, heartfelt ballad.
Just my opinion...

I think most of us Celt-punk-type bands start off with the trads, just to get our feet wet and see how we'll work out as a group, and more often than not, a lot of those manage to stay in the set indefinitely. Our version of "Finnegan's Wake" (and thanks for the kind words, by the way!) was exactly that, along with "The Irish Rover," both of which we still play to this day, almost 7 years on. I firmly believe that keeping a firm stable of trad tunes is important for any band in the genre... it gives you something to play that the audience knows, and also gives you filler for those 3- or 4-hour St. Paddy's Day sets. I agree wholeheartedly about "The Wild Rover," although there are some great versions out there. I'll take that any day, though, over bollocks like "Irish Eyes Are Smiling" or the fucking "Unicorn Song."

Paddyrasta - "Molly Malone" - Sorry, but Celtic Reggae is far too entertaining to not love. "The Tossers - "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye" The Tossers - "Seven Drunken Nights"
There's a bunch of others, I know, but I'm drawing a blank.

As far as the Wild Rover goes, I love the Dubliners version the best. DKM do a good version too. It is a bit overplayed, but I like the Dubliners and DKM's versions.

Sharky Doyles "The Broad Black Brimmer" is one of my favourites. I have always loved this Wolfe Tone classic and couldn't understand why nobody had decided to include it in an album.
Another song I like is Greenlad Whale Fishers "Peggy Lettermore".
Regarding "The Night that Paddy Murphy Died" I vote for Great Big Sea. In fact, I feel that the Fiddler's Green boys love Great Big Sea and Spirit of the West, since they had already covered another Great Big Sea number (Mary Mac) and Spirit of the West "Profiteers"

Until somebody actually DOES do a spirited rendition of 'The Unicorn' then, as far as I'm concerned, the true and searing potential trad punk has not been realized.
The day that happens is the day I throw my scally cap to the floor and cry hot flowing tears of appreciation, dedication and pride.
It'll happen. JUST HOLD FAST, BOYS ... it'll happen.
Nice to see a Pubcrawler here. Gentlemen, they be.

They're not a Celtic punk or rock group (more of a punkabilly type outfit; think Social Distortion meets the Misfits), but there's a band out of Dallas, TX called The Staggers who do an absolutely rocking version of the Unicorn Song. I think it just might fit your criteria for that one, Will - check them out when you get a chance. It is without a doubt the ONLY version that doesn't make me want to punch kittens.

I'm generally a huge fan of trad covers - way too many to mention - but I will point out Tears for Beers as a German band that have done possibly the best arrangements of trad songs I've ever heard.
Specifically...
Drunken Sailor Bonnie Ship the Diamond Black is the Colour Raggle Taggle Gypsy Banks of Red Roses Sam Hall As I Roved Out Step it Out Mary Cruel Sister
And I took my grandmother to see The Irish Rovers doing the Unicorn Song once. It was the worst hour and a half of my life and if I could have found a sharp enough object I would have cut out my splean just for the distraction.

That shonky old stage Irish unicorn!! With his bloody sugar cubes and flapping eyelids. If he does ever turn up, I'll whip him one on the rump and ride him off with no pants on (that is, the unicorn has no pants on but I do have pants on).
Whatever happened to Georgie? Whatever happened to his Unicorns ....?
I'm going to write a particularly violent, alcohol-soaked song about it. The imagined further adventures of Georgie and The Unicorns, if you will. Lots of rotgut, fights, sleepers, alcohol poisoning deaths, bad speed, hallucinations and tuberculosis.
You heard it here first.
