Okay, I popped for it, (What the hell, I've the imulse-spending problem anyways!) It should be due soon.
They really set the bar high for themselves with their debut release and a total band make-over means that if this "new" Blood or Whiskey falls flat, people will be comparing them to themselves of the past. That's gonna sting! A new direction with the same solid, manic, sound could be a homerun. I think there may be a lot riding on this.
Here's hoping!

Rumor has it Barney Murray's writing songs again -- working with Paul and Colm (ex-BoW).

Barney is a great song writer, his "Goodbye My Girl" is one of my all time favorite songs! And I've always liked Paul's banjo playing. (Colm was in the hoosegow for one reason or another when I saw them.)
Are the recording? Have they a new band? Will Barney be playing with them? These and many other questions need answering!

The cd showed up in the mail today. I've just finished listening through it for the first time. It almost sounds like a different band. but a good one. lots of oi and ska influences in it. much heavier and less traditional than the previous (but we already knew that right) I'll listen to it a few more times before my final descision though.

To be honest.. I think I would be more interested in hearing what Barney is doing than hearing the new BoW

I agree. Blood Or Whiskey is a different band almost entirely. Barney was the main attraction before. Although that may not be too fair of me to say since my copy of 'Cashed Out on Culture' is still en route.
I hope our moderator's rumor mill is correct and Barney is collaborating with Paul and Colm, (from the original line-up!)

Someone was comparing Larkin to Blood or Whiskey. How's that make you feel, Chad?

Barney was awesome. I hope he starts up a band again. I saw them in NYC two days before 9/11. The band was awesome. We had a round or two of Guinness with the band before the show, I spoke with Barney just so I could say I met him. During the show I consummed so many pints I had to use buildings as a crutch to get home. I'm glad to hear he's better and writing. Now he needs to get Tommy, Paul and Colm and make us another CD. Please?

Haha! I did the same thing when I saw them in Lowell, Massachusetts. Barney and I were both ordering at the bar so I struck up a conversation about the bouzouki with him, (just so I could say I met him!) Really nice, down-to-earth guy. I hope that rumor is accurate!

Yup, it's true, I heard it from his brother. I guess Barney had a lot of material he started before he got sick, and he's working on that and new stuff too with Colm and Paul. It'll be nice to hear him back again. Haha! I did the same thing when I saw them in Lowell, Massachusetts. got the album couple of days ago and after a couple of plays im not overly impressed really, sounds quite average with the exception of a few tunes. im hoping though that it'll be one o them records that grows on you after a few more plays.

I'm still waiting for my copy. Only going on 2 weeks, but had I ordered it on Amazon.com, I would be giving my opinion on right now.
Barney, Colm and Paul were the "trad" half of the original BoW, instrumentally speaking. I am really curious what type of sound they will have.

FINALLY! My copy of Cashed out on Culture arrived today. ...and after a couple of plays im not overly impressed really, sounds quite average with the exception of a few tunes. After a listen or two, I gotta agree. Not bad. Not fantastic. Compared with the debut release, it comes across a bit contrived. The self-titled disc was just a bunch of great songs with no effort on image at all. It just came out that way. "Cashed Out" seems like the band doesn't want you to forget they are a punk rock band! Very image concious, (Not just the cover photos either, with the two mohawks and more facial piercings and tattoos than a Lollapalooza show!) but the sound. Although it does maintain its driving acoustic rhythms and some strong banjo work, as in the previous releases, there seems to be more emphasis on choral refrains and shouts from the side. There are a few really good tracks, nothing that just sucks, but no giants. I, too, hope this CD grows on me after a few more spins. P.S. Kudos to the band for their tip of the hat to Horslips' "Trouble (with a Capital T)" in "Jar'd for Life".

Someone was comparing Larkin to Blood or Whiskey. How's that make you feel, Chad? Makes me feel quite honoured to be honest... especially since I have been a fan of the first record since 98. (I was back packing across Ireland and stayed with Mero for a few days, He does Rejected/Eire records) he played it for me and burnt a copy of it, though it was a different order... genius it is... as far as "Paddy Punk" goes.. they are my favorites. (as I don't put the Pogues in that catagory) My goal with Larkin has always been to stick to more of a Dubs, Clancys, Wolfe Tones type band with electric bass and a drum kit. so yeah... B I T C H I N'

THANX TO ALL FOR YOUR COMMENTS, IT SHOWS YOU CARE .TO CLEAR A FEW THINGS UP THOUGH. THE LP ( WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT) SOUND - WISE IS NO MORE A PUNK LP THAN THE FIRST TWO. IT'S JUST THAT IT'S MIXED BETTER AND YOU CAN HEAR THE DRUMS, BASS & GUITAR BETTER THAN ON PREVIOUS ONES. IF THE FIRST TWO LPS WERE MIXED THIS WAY THEY WOULD SOUND AS "PUNK" AS SOME OF YOU SEEM TO RECKON IT DOES( ALTHOUGH WHEN THIS COMES UP PEOPLE ALWAYS SEEM TO FORGET FROM THE FIRST LP THE SONG "FEILE" WITH DISTORTED GUITAR & A HARDCORE BEAT AND THE DISTORTED BASS WHICH IS ON ABOUT HALF THE LP, SOMETHING I'VE NEVER USED...). SECONDLY THE BANDS SOUND HAS TO MOVE & CHANGE ( WHETHER PEOPLE LIKE IT OR NOT - WHY TRY TO MAKE THE SAME LP OVER & OVER AGAIN?, WHICH SOUND -WISE WE COULD HAVE EASILY DONE). AS FOR THE "CONTRIVED IMAGE" DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH, THERE'S TWO OF US WITH SPIKEY HAIR IN THE COVER SHOT.SO f**kING WHAT! THERE'S NOTHING CONTRIVED ABOUT IT WHEN YOU'VE BEEN DOING IT EVERDAY FOR MORE YEARS THAN I CARE TO REMEMBER. IT'S JUST THE WAY WE ARE.IT'S A SIMPLE AS THAT. IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE YOU'RE IT'S YOUR OPINION THAT'S CONTRIVED HAVING JUDGED US BEFORE YOU HAD ACTUALLY HEARD IT & YER GRABBING AT ANYTHING NOW TO RUN IT DOWN. NOW OF COURSE I COULDN'T POSSIBLY EXPECT EVERYONE TO LIKE THE LP, BUT WE'VE TAKEN CHANCES, FOR BETTER OR WORSE AND WE STAND BY IT, AND ARE PROUD OF IT. AND THAT MAKES IT MORE PUNK ROCK THAN WHATEVER OUR f**kING HAIRCUTS ARE LIKE. WHAT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER IS WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, I'M NOT REALLY BOTHERED 'COS YER MONEYS ALREADY IN MY POCKET. THANX ALL , THANX FOR THE INTEREST, AGAIN IT SHOWS THAT PEOPLE CARE & ALL JOKES ASIDE, THAT DOES MATTER TO US. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE'RE BLOOD OR WHISKEY & WE DECIDE WHAT WE SOUND LIKE.PEOPLE CAN OBVIOUSLY HAVE THEIR OPINIONS AND THEY'RE WELCOME TO THEM BUT IN THE EVERLASTING ( CONTRIVED) PUNK SPIRIT, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, FORM YOUR OWN BAND & DO IT BETTER YERSELF !! CHEERS, BEANO , BLOOD OR WHISKEY, KILDARE. WWW.BLOODORWHISKEY.IE

No need to get defensive, Beano.
And I wouldn't form an opinion without listening to the CD, (or put my money in your pocket, as you say.)
Just my opinion. It may suck, but it's mine. Deal.

F the professor. what an ass Gee, maybe I should kiss arse and say "Ooh your soo great!" When I thought it was just okay. Feel free to do that, "Guest," maybe you can even apply as a groupie. For those who want an HONEST opinion, I'll give it. For those who want an ass-kissing from a wide-eyed fan without enough guts to share an opinion, 'da student' is your man, or rather, person. Men have balls.
