The Fenians
I think my favorite version is DKM's. I have always loved the lyrics to the song, Eric Bogle wrote an incredible song. Al Barr almost sounds completely different singing that song than he does in every other Dropkick Murphys song.

Yeah I like the DKM version the best - although The Fureys is great too.
Can't add any to the list myself, although I have sung it in the shower a few times....How do you do, young Willie McBride....but none of you will ever get to hear that version ;-)

Beautiful song and we are going to have a go at it later I think.
First time I heard it I blubbed into me pint...just got back from visiting the graves of my fallen relatives...one of them was in the Gordons..the song just bought back all the images of row upon row of white crosses. Very sobering altho I would change the lyrics in the last verse
'Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame The killing, the dying, it was all done in vain, '
shame? vain? Personally I think there was no shame and it certainly wasnt in vain. You may argue about how the war was fought but if it hadnt been..............................
anyway.....I suppose I should steer clear of talking about war!!!

Although the song was about WWI I think that line is referring to all the later wars that were not suppose to have happened. Earlier in the song you hear "the war that was suppose to end all wars" and at the time they believed it. Of course they needed to fight that war, however if only they could imagine the wars that would follow. Basically I think the point the song is trying to make is that the cost of war is not worth it in the end and the way man is selfish by nature causes the neverending cycle of wars and prevents man in general from learning from previous generation's mistakes.

Interesting topic.
I wanted to join in sooner but I couldn't stop watching Brian's avatar/film of that fire-eating jackass! It just doesn't stop being funny!
Anyways,
Also add The Clancy Brothers.

C'mon. You can't ban someone for liking a white power band, even if the band sucks, which they may or may not, I do not know of them... Not the point.
Anyways, the Skrewdriver fan didn't say anything radical or anti-semitic, or racist. Just listed a band that did a song. If the band recorded it, then it should make the list, prejudices aside.
And, on that note, I just did a quick Google search...
It appears neo-Nazi teeny boppers, "Prussian Blue" also did a recording of this song, so tack 'em on the list!

Skrewdriver or Prussian Blue? (Not that I've heard either.) Is there something about this song that I am unfamiliar with that neo-Nazis see as some sort of rally or condoning of their cause? It seems a bit past coincidence that 2 of these style bands would both embrace this song. I mean, it IS an anti-war song so, right, so what's the connection?

I haven't been on here in a while, so I missed the timely start of the witch hunt.
Uh...................I thought we were just making a comprehensive list of all of the bands who covered it. I typed one word and my character went on trial. And yes the Skrewdriver version does suck, and sorry but so does the DKM version. Hell, I didn't even state that I LIKED Skrewdriver.
But the fact that someone wants me instantly banned for typing one word...........take a look in the mirror, that's a pretty fascist attitude. Sounds like someone had a bad experience.
I'm not defending anyone creeds or beliefs here, I am just in awe that one word stirred this kind of reaction. Please let me know of any other bands that are "the name that is not spoken" so that i don't ever type such an incendiary word. I have spoken my piece. I like this site, but Mods, please feel free to ban me if that is your wish.
Prosper, Trey

Perhaps I am a very succinct and kurt individual! ;D
I do see your point, however if I was posting on another music related message board and someone posted: Rage Against the Machine, I personally wouldn't instantly cry to ban them because they were a "Commie Pinko". Also Skrewdriver wasn't always a racist band, and not all british streetpunk bands started out started out "squeeky clean". Alot of people bury their socially unacceptable or unpopular views in order to function within the masses and achieve commercial success. Thats all I really care to discuss that stuff...............................let's talk about single malt scotches or Uilleann pipes now. Howsabout that Glenfiddich 18 year old...mmmmmmmmmmm mmmm!
