Thinks've been kinda quiet here this weekend. Here's some food for thought:
Recent talk of the Pogues’ box set got me ponderin’ the band’s influence. I mean obviously, this whole genre owes credit to the the Pogues and a handful of other early Celtic styled musicians, but what I was thinking about specifically was band names. A number of bands chose to honor the influence of Mr. MacGowan and Company for all to see in the names of their own bands. Some fairly blatantly, others, less so. I went through the “LINKS” page here at S’n’O and listed the one’s that I have noticed:
Icewagon Flu (Rain Street: 2nd verse, 1st line.) The Shanes The Boys from County Hell The Brogues The Donegal X-Press (Okay. Technically named after a Shane & the Popes song...) The Kissers The Lash the Mahones The Pug Mahones The Rogues
Also up for possible consideration: The Greenland Whalefishers (Judges? Yay or Nay?)
So much for a boring Sunday afternoon. Any contesting? Further contributions? Thoughts one way or the other?
Anyways, my 2 cents.

The Popes! ;D
Huh - I never made that connection before - I guess because of the flu/flew thing. Learn something new every day...

Oddly enough, The Sods were as well. We weren't using it as sod, as any of us would think offhand, but as an abbreviated "sodomy" 'Cus y'know... there were already The Lash, an' several Rum-esque bands.
Jus' sayin'. Least that's the story Jonah told me.

And it continues...
Just recently discovered the band "The Pokes" outta Germany. They make no claims to be Irish, (in fact, they deny it openly,) but make no denials as to where they got their name, though they only allude to it, albeit strongly.

What about 'The Navigators' or is that just one I came up with?

What about 'The Navigators' or is that just one I came up with? Might be one of your own. I did a quick search, and the only "Navigators" I found was some sappy, sensitive, ponytail guys outta Houston.

The Pogoes were pretty good. Love the names of the band members. Not too big a surprise I guess. Aren't Greenland Whalefishers popular in Japan? I know they used to tour there and released a CD just for that market. But my favorite Japanese cover song is still the Magokoro Brothers cover of Dylan's My Back Pages, one of Dylan's best songs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF388uBmf54

A couple more to re-activate this thread, apparently... More band names with a nod to the Pogues: KISS MY ASS! Outta Boston. If they didn't say they were Pogues influenced, I might not have included them. But they do, so I did. www.myspace.com/bostonpoguesTHE BHOYS FROM COUNTY HELL. Yet another "County Hell" band. Pogues tribute. www.myspace.com/bhoysfromthecountyhell STREAMS OF WHISKEY www.myspace.com/letsgowhiskeyand another, www.myspace.com/streamsofwhiskeyusaROYAL CANAL, outta Spain. www.myspace.com/royalcanal. They don't sound Celtic but they list the Pogues as the biggest influence. THE GARTLONEY RATS, www.myspace.com/thegartloneyrats, from Adelaide, Australia and, lastly, THE LOGUES from Northern Ireland, www.myspace.com/logues. Worth checking out.
