So.. We were planning to hit up the northern west coast, at the end of July. Was pannin' a show in BC.. Problem bein', we've got one member of the band with a warrant, an' one on probation. Think it's doable? No' sure how the border shite works with that rot, on the way in or out. figured maybe some o' you lot tha' live tha' way would be able t'tell me.

I was reading David Rovics blog on myspace about Canada a couple weeks ago. It seems they have stepped up security quite a bit and even him being an activist musician he hasn't always been allowed in. I'm not sure I don't live near the border but it sounds like it's a lot more work to cross.
When you say your band member has a warrant you mean its pending right now?

Your probably fucked. If you have instruments you are definatly fucked. We got kicked out for trying to bring a snare drum, guitar and bouzouki across. two of us had some small charges on our records...... You need to have a work visa for the band in order to legally play one single show out of the country.

I wouldn't try it, unless:
a) You're not bringing any instruments across the border b) You're not all travelling together, and c) You don't mind hanging out at the border for 8-12 hours only to be told you can't go across
And even then, I probably wouldn't bother. Border security is pretty tight. If you look at all 'dodgy' to the C&I folks they will stop you and check you out, and you can't get in with warrants or a record (or to play music w/o the proper paperwork and $$ - even if you're playing for free).
Whenever I've played up there, we take a couple separate vehicles, bring the wives, dress conservatively, have friends up there we're 'visiting', and borrow instruments. Basically you have to fool them into thinking you're tourists.
IMO, not worth it. If you decide to go for it, cool, but be prepared for the worst.

Well, s'good to know now, as opposed to tryin' an' then gettin' e'eryone fuckered over. (jus' t'clear up) One o' our guitarists has a warrant still out for 'im, in Michigan. The other jus' recently got hit fer a DUI, an' she's stuck on probation, an' without a liscence fer the next 3 months or so. An' we were plannin' on rentin' a uhaul trailer, fer all the gear, so tha' would prolly've made it doubley worse.
Much appreciated on all the information, folks.
Looks like we're either gonna hold off fer a while, or pick a new direction entirely.
And at least now, I've only got a couple of shows to have to pull out of.
