a lot of really traditional players use some weird tuning (DADGAD or some weird shit like that) and a lot fingerpick.

no problem.
it depends though. what are some examples of bands you are thinking of when it comes to the style of their guitar playing?

ooooooohhhhhh, now that's different.
bands like flogging molly, the pogues, and the tossers just play normal chords in standard tuning most of the time. i've noticed a lot of them have a kind of 'scratchy' sound like they use old strings too. the electric guitarist of flogging molly uses a lot of bar chords.

The guitarist from Flogging Molly has almost a country-sound, when he isn't just playing barre and open chords. One of the trademarks of celtic folk music is using the guitar as almost a percussion instrument. There's also the moving tenor voice thing, that's comparable to a walking bass line, but with a very distinct feel.
American folk music is very different. The guitar tends to either play basic Carter Family accompaniment, a blues style, or the synthesis of the two that is bluegrass guitar.

Leadbelly actually tuned down to B: BEADF#B, which would also make a great band name.
