What did everyone think of it? I think it was good but not as good as Long Dim Road.

I enjoyed it more than Long Dim Road. The Ballad Of NATO is an excellent track. Purgatory is still one of my favorite albums.

theyre best record id say, although i agree that the odd time duggins' voice does get annoying...such as on chicago. ballad of a thoughtful rover is my best track on there though id say.

I think Purgatory is a much superior CD to Long Dim Road. Long Dim Road seems like the music and the lyrics were either written by different people or at least completely independent of each other. Many times the words seem hurried to fit the alotted music. Has anyone else noticed this or am I off my nut?
I've always appreciated Duggins' voice. It is distinct from everyone else's and provides a nice identity to the band.
My favorite's off Purgatory are Caoin (lament) and Far Away.
Speaking of annoying voices, on Communication and Conviction, another good disc, what is up with the bad jokes intro guy?

Speaking of annoying voices, on Communication and Conviction, another good disc, what is up with the bad jokes intro guy? Yeah I know what you're saying about his lyrics not fitting. Not to get artsy here but his words aren't always graceful. No, sometimes they wouldn't even pass as bad poetry. "Ballad of NATO" is a good example where he wants to say something and grace be dammed. It's like he's reading an essay by Noam Chomsky. But, to me, it works. The reason it works is because he has something heavy to say and so he uses his words like a club to bludgeon you with. He 's not like Dylan, who wrote words that cut like a knife. Instead, Duggins uses his words to smash with. He says, "This is the Truth and you're not going to effing miss it." I think it works for him and his band. And I've said enough.

But seriously, ;D
I think you've presented a very compelling argument. Perhaps his message has more weight than its delivery. I still feel the two components, (words and music,) are slightly askew, but I will listen with new ears next time I play "Long Dim Road."
Although I have always liked the song 'Last Night on Earth' best off that disc, (and NOT just because off the Athenry segway, which is nice...)

It's been what- 2 years since Purgatory came out (I think) and I still listen to it on a fairly regular basis. The liberal college boy in me continues to love "The Squall," "Memory" is going to have a place in my wedding festivities this fall, and a few of my significant others have already been informed that the "secret song" after "Going Away" is to be played, follwed by "Going Away" itself, at my funeral (may it be a long time away.) Wonderful album. I've played it for a number of people and the only reaction I've ever experienced was them either trying to steal my copy or asking me where they can get one of their own.
