I knew St. Patrick's Day would bring out a new batch of music in the Celtic Folk-Punk field, and I knew that I would be investing heavily in it. Over the past 3½ months, however, I have been having a Paddy-Punk purchasing field day!
My Celtic Folk-Punk CD acquisitions since March:
The Porters - Anywhere but Home ♪ Big Bad Bollocks - Hanged at Gibbet Rock ♪ Prydein - Loud Pipes Save Lives ♪, ♫ The Dreadnoughts - Legends Never Die ♪ The Pubcrawlers - One Too Many Again ♪ The Ruffians - Live At CBGB’s The Dirges - When Laughin’ Got You Killed ♫ Fiddler’s Green - Drive Me Mad In Search Of A Rose - Kind of Green The Mighty Regis - County Sligo ♫ The Fisticuffs - Bruised But Not Beaten The Fisticuffs - Neatly Stumblin’ ♬ The Vandon Arms - Health to the Company
As I write this, I am also awaiting a couple of newer releases to become available to me from the more remote corners of the globe, (well, remote to me!)
Anybody else get any new material they wanna brag about?

Love the Dirges sound especially.

I reckon The Fisticuffs have got a lot going for them. For a start, their fiddle player has restored my faith in the fact that some fiddle players who join these bands can actually play trad music. The fiddle on their myspace has real depth and warmth, a great traditional sound, which is more than can be said by every crew that - largely through necessity - has to rope in a (chick, always a chick) fiddle player from the dreaded fucking CLASSICAL background who can make SOUND on the thing, even sound that marries up perfectly to the music, but wouldn't know natural trad folk/Celtic/roots/whatever nameless emotion if they fell straight over it.
And yes, this is a longstanding and personal hang-up of mine and there are countless examples of it and yes, I'm fucking right on this one.

I completely agree with you will on the whole fiddle/violin deal. There is a world of difference between how you play violin and how you play the fiddle. same instrument. different soul. Thats why I enjoy bands like mcdermott's two hours and neck so much. they really got the trad style.

Arcadia Kust, (how's that for a name!?!) A chick, yes, but she and the mandolin player just work awesome together!

Hi, Professor Gommel.
It seems that you have spent all the money that you have saved!
I have bought some CDs in the last two months, some of them are old, but now that the Euro is strong, it´s the right time to catch up with those US/Canadian bands that were still waiting in my wishlist. The new ones I have got are The Mighty Regis "Co. Sligo" and The Fisticuffs "Bruised but not Beaten"
I'm a little bit disappointed with The Mighty Regis, but I love The Fisticuffs from South Chicago (even if they are at a lower level than the Tossers)
Regarding the German bands, I feel that Fiddler's Green have taken the right road after the leaving of Peter Pathos. I bought the debut and the second album by ISOAR many years ago, directly from the band. "Conquering" was very good (Ok, it's a Pogues copy, but I enjoyed it). The second one lost their raucous side and then I decided not to buy their future albums.
Cheers

Yeah. Saving is not my strongest suit.
Regarding the German bands, I don't have any of the earlier In Search of a Rose discs, but I have heard a track or two over the years, and based on those few tunes, I'd say they have returned to an edgier form with Kind Of Green. Not a hardcore punk, but not "folk-rock" so much either. The Porters Anywhere but Home is a fave outta Deutschland of late for me, some good stuff on that. And Fiddler's Green's Drive Me Mad is a really good disc! I don't know any of their other stuff, but this one rocks.
The Mighty Regis as well, didn't quite live up to my expectations. But the disc was only 24 minutes long, 10 tracks, and 3 of which were covers, (and two of those were The Parting Glass. Who starts a CD with an a cappella rendition of "The Parting Glass?")

Heh - tell us how you really feel, Will ;D Far be it from me to disagree with the estimable Captain Steamboat, but... frankly I find it equally annoying when people can't really handle their instruments and excuse it by claiming that they play with 'soul' and 'feeling' instead of 'all that music-school bullsh*t', or that 'real' trad musicians only play simple, primative lines. I'm not talking about anyone specific here, and I'm not promoting technical virtuosity uber alles--dog knows I'm no Yngwie, and everybody starts somewhere. But there's something to be said having the chops before you get up and play the song. Did I just lose my punk-rock cred? Ah well... I'm just feeling defensive since both of our (guy) fiddle players came from a classical background. My two shiny bobbins... no personal offense intended

I saw a show last weekend, at my favourite wee dive bar. An' the bulk of it was boring as fuck-all. The last band, however, was this badass bluegrass outfit, from St. Louis, called the Monads. An' I recognised the banjo player. I couldn't figure out from where, 'til halfway through their set. But it dawned on me, and I verified. Was the banjo player of the Whole Sick Crew.
Suffice it to say, I bought a cd, an' I've been listening to the fuck out of it.

I'll be able to get us signed up on CDBaby next week. I don't know how long it'll take them to make the CD available (they'll also put it up for download on iTunes, eMusic and the like).
I'll be discussing getting a few copies available here on the Shite'n'Onions store with the rest of the band tomorrow.
I'll be sure to let you guys know.
